Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about fiber optic transceivers, compatibility, ordering, and technical specifications.

About NAFO

What is NAFO / North America Fiber Optics?+

North America Fiber Optics (NAFO) is the sole authorized North American distributor of Coretek Opto, a fiber optic transceiver manufacturer based in Taiwan. NAFO sources directly from Coretek and distributes their full product range — 1,100+ SKUs from 155 Mbps to 800G — to carriers, data centers, integrators, and enterprises across Canada and the United States.

Who manufactures the transceivers NAFO sells?+

All transceivers are manufactured by Coretek Opto, a Taiwan-based optical components company established in 1997. Coretek handles the complete manufacturing stack — from die attach and wire bonding through optical sub-assembly and final test. Products are sold under the Coretek brand through NAFO as the sole North American distributor.

What is the difference between NAFO and Coretek Opto?+

NAFO (North America Fiber Optics) is Coretek Opto's sole North American distribution partner. Coretek manufactures the transceivers in Taiwan; NAFO handles North American sales, custom coding requests, technical support, and order fulfillment for the region. When you buy through NAFO, you are buying directly from the manufacturer's authorized channel.

Are Coretek transceivers new factory products or gray market modules?+

Coretek Opto transceivers are new, factory-manufactured products — not refurbished, gray market, or relabeled third-party modules. Every unit ships with a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects. NAFO is the sole authorized North American distribution channel for Coretek, providing direct factory sourcing, full traceability, and post-sale support.

Compatibility & Standards

Are your transceivers compatible with Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and other major brands?+

Our transceivers are MSA-compliant and are likely to work with most major network equipment brands. Compatibility can vary depending on the specific platform and software version. When requesting a quote, let us know which brand and model you are deploying and we will do our best to confirm compatibility.

What does MSA-compliant mean?+

MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) is an industry standard that defines the mechanical dimensions, electrical interface, and management data for a given transceiver form factor. An MSA-compliant transceiver from any manufacturer will physically fit and electrically function in any MSA-compliant cage of the same form factor.

What does DOM (Digital Optical Monitoring) mean, and do your transceivers support it?+

DOM allows the switch to read real-time diagnostic data from the transceiver — transmit/receive optical power, laser temperature, supply voltage, and bias current. Most of our transceivers support DOM. If you have DOM-specific requirements, mention this in your quote request.

What is the difference between single-mode (SMF) and multimode (MMF) fiber?+

Single-mode fiber (SMF, 9/125 µm) carries a single light path and supports much longer distances — from 10 km (LR) to 80 km (ZR/ZX), with ultra-long-haul variants beyond 80 km available for carrier applications. Used for inter-building, campus, metro, and long-haul links.

Multimode fiber (MMF, 50/125 µm OM3/OM4) is limited to shorter distances — up to 300–400 m for 10G SR, 100 m for 100G SR4. Used for intra-building and data-center rack-to-rack links.

Ensure you match the transceiver wavelength (850 nm for MMF, 1310/1550 nm for SMF) to the fiber you have installed.

Products & Specifications

What form factors do you carry?+

SFF, SFF 2x5, 1x9, 2x9, GBIC (1G); SFP, SFP BiDi (1G); SFP+, XFP, CSFP/CSFP+ (10G); SFP28, CPRI SFP28 (25G/32G); QSFP+ (40G/56G); QSFP28, SFP-DD, SFP56-DD (100G); QSFP56, QSFP-DD (200G); QSFP-DD, OSFP, QSFP112 (400G/800G); plus PON modules and AOC/DAC cables across all speed tiers.

What temperature ranges are available?+

Commercial grade: 0°C to 70°C — for air-conditioned data centers and indoor deployments. Industrial grade: −40°C to 85°C — required for outdoor telecom cabinets, aerial installations, energy and utility applications, military/defense, and harsh industrial environments.

Are your transceivers RoHS certified?+

Yes. All Coretek Opto transceivers are RoHS certified, complying with EU restrictions on hazardous materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, and certain flame retardants.

Do you offer DWDM or CWDM transceivers?+

Yes. We carry CWDM transceivers for 1G, 10G, and 25G using the standard CWDM wavelength grid (1270–1610 nm in 20 nm steps). DWDM options for metro and long-haul with 100 GHz or 50 GHz channel spacing are also available. Specify the ITU channel or wavelength in your quote request.

What is the maximum reach available for a 10G single-mode transceiver?+

For 10G SFP+, the longest standard reach is 80 km (ZR) at 1550 nm. Extended reach variants up to 120 km are available in some configurations. DWDM 10G transceivers with external amplifiers can reach further in carrier transport applications.

Ordering & Pricing

Why is there no pricing on the website?+

Pricing varies significantly based on form factor, speed, wavelength, reach, temperature grade, coding requirements, and quantity. We quote each order individually to ensure you receive accurate pricing. Submit a quote request and we will respond within 1 business day.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?+

Minimum order quantities vary by product. Many standard configurations are available in single-unit quantities for evaluation. Production orders benefit from volume pricing at 10, 50, 100, or 500+ unit tiers.

Can I get samples before placing a larger order?+

Yes, sample quantities are available for qualification testing on most standard configurations. Include "evaluation / qualification sample" in your quote request and mention the target platform and application.

How do I request a quote?+

Submit a quote request through our Contact page with:

• Form factor (e.g., SFP+, QSFP28)

• Data rate and application (e.g., 10GbE, GPON)

• Reach requirement (e.g., SR, LR, 10 km)

• Target platform for coding (e.g., Cisco Nexus 9000)

• Temperature grade (commercial or industrial)

• Quantity needed

We respond within 1 business day.

Shipping & Lead Times

Do you ship outside Canada and the United States?+

As the North American distributor for Coretek Opto, our primary territory is Canada and the United States. Contact us about international inquiries.

Technical Support

My switch does not recognize the transceiver. What should I check?+

1. Verify the coding matches your switch model. If you see "unsupported transceiver," the vendor string may not match. Contact us with your exact switch model and software version.

2. Ensure the transceiver is fully seated (you should hear a click) and the dust cap is removed.

3. On Cisco IOS: add `service unsupported-transceiver` to bypass the OEM check on non-Cisco-branded modules.

4. Check DOM thresholds — some switches log warnings if optical power is slightly outside the expected range.

What warranty do your transceivers carry?+

All Coretek Opto transceivers carry a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects. If a module fails under normal operating conditions within the warranty period, we will replace it.
